Acupuncture / dry needling

Providing expert pain relief for patients across Guildford, Woking, and the surrounding Surrey area.

Targeted relief for persistent muscle knots, chronic pain, and sports injuries using modern Western acupuncture techniques.

If you are struggling with stubborn “knots,” recurring muscle spasms, or chronic tension that hasn’t responded to traditional massage, dry needling could be the key to your recovery. At GW Osteopathy, we integrate this highly effective technique with our osteopathic care to help reset your neuromuscular system and get you moving pain-free.

About Dry Needling

Dry needling is a modern, science-based intervention used to treat muscular pain and myofascial dysfunction. The term “dry” simply means the procedure is performed without the injection of any substance; instead, it relies on the mechanical effect of a fine, sterile needle to stimulate the tissue.

The treatment focuses on Myofascial Trigger Points (MTPs)—what most people commonly refer to as “knots.” These are hyperirritable spots within a muscle band that are not only painful to the touch but can also “radiate” pain to other parts of the body. By inserting a needle directly into these points, we can trigger a physiological response that encourages the muscle to release, improves blood flow, and reduces local and referred pain.

While the tool—a solid filament needle—is the same as that used in traditional acupuncture, the philosophy is different. Our approach is rooted in Western Neuroanatomy and the scientific study of the musculoskeletal system rather than ancient Chinese medicine theories.

Acupuncture and Dry Needling FAQ

What is a "trigger point" exactly?

A trigger point is a hyperirritable spot in a skeletal muscle associated with a hypersensitive, palpable nodule or “knot.” These areas are often the source of “referred pain,” where a knot in your shoulder might actually be the cause of your tension headache.

In a healthy, relaxed muscle, you will feel very little discomfort during insertion. However, if the muscle is sensitive or contains an active trigger point, you may feel a brief sensation similar to a muscle cramp, known as a “local twitch response.” This is a positive sign that the muscle is reacting and releasing.

Yes. While the needles are identical, traditional acupuncture focuses on balancing the flow of energy (Qi) along meridians. Dry needling is a Western medical approach focused on the physical release of muscle tissue and the modulation of the nervous system based on modern anatomy.

Many patients notice an improvement in range of motion and a reduction in pain immediately or within 24 hours. For chronic conditions, a series of sessions may be needed to fully retrain the muscle and prevent the trigger points from returning.

The most common side effect is a feeling of “muscle soreness” in the treated area, similar to how you might feel after a heavy gym session. This typically lasts between 12 and 48 hours. Occasionally, minor bruising may occur.

Absolutely. We use single-use, sterile, disposable needles. Our osteopaths are highly trained in anatomy and needle technique to ensure the procedure is safe, hygienic, and effective.

Yes, we often find that dry needling works best when integrated into a broader osteopathic treatment plan. Releasing the muscle knots with a needle can make the subsequent joint mobilizations and stretches even more effective.

Why use GW Osteopathy?

  • Anatomical Experts: Our osteopaths have an in-depth understanding of the musculoskeletal system, ensuring needles are placed with pinpoint accuracy.
  • Integrated Care: We don’t just “needle the pain.” We look at why that trigger point formed in the first place—whether due to posture, gait, or repetitive strain—and address the root cause.
  • Specialist Partnerships: While we handle the musculoskeletal side, we know that acupuncture has many other benefits. For non-muscular issues, we partner with expert acupuncturist Esther Holford, who operates from our Willow Health Therapy Rooms.

Top tips for getting the most out of acupuncture and dry needling

Top tips

Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water helps your body process the chemical changes triggered by the release of the muscle knot.

Keep Moving: Gentle movement or light stretching after your session helps the muscle integrate the “release” and prevents stiffness.

Apply Gentle Heat: If the area feels sore, a warm bath or a heat pack can help soothe the muscle and improve local circulation.

Avoid Strenuous Exercise: Give your body the rest of the day to recover before heading back to high-impact sports or heavy lifting.

Monitor the Change: Take note of how your pain levels or range of motion change over the next 48 hours so you can update your osteopath at your next visit.
