About Mummy MOT

About the Mummy MOT® at GW Osteopathy

The Mummy MOT® is a comprehensive postnatal health assessment designed for women following both vaginal and C-section deliveries. Pregnancy and childbirth place significant demands on the female body, often leading to postural shifts, abdominal separation (diastasis recti), and pelvic floor dysfunction. Whether you gave birth six weeks ago or six years ago, this specialised check-up evaluates how your body is recovering and provides a clear pathway back to full strength and confidence.

Led by certified Mummy MOT® practitioner Zaneta Kwiecien, the assessment looks at your body as an interconnected system. Zaneta evaluates your posture, functional movement, lower back and hip alignment, abdominal muscle separation, breathing mechanics, and ribcage mobility.

As part of the consultation—and only with your explicit consent—a gentle internal pelvic floor examination can be performed. This allows us to assess muscle tone, strength, endurance, and coordinate how well the pelvic floor contracts and relaxes. From there, a bespoke treatment and rehabilitation programme is designed around your personal goals, whether that means lifting your baby pain-free, managing bladder urgency, or returning to local running groups across Surrey.

Mummy MOT FAQ

Mummy MOT FAQ

When should I book my Mummy MOT®?

We recommend booking your assessment from 6 weeks post-delivery following your GP check. However, it is never too late—women who gave birth months or even years ago still experience substantial benefits from a Mummy MOT®.

No. An internal assessment provides valuable insight into pelvic muscle tone and healing, but it is completely optional. If you prefer an external-only evaluation of your posture, spine, and abdominal wall, your treatment plan will be adapted accordingly.

Absolutely. C-section deliveries involve major abdominal surgery, which impacts core activation, breathing mechanics, and posture. The Mummy MOT® evaluates your scar, abdominal wall integrity, and pelvic alignment to ensure optimal recovery.

Please wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing or activewear. You are more than welcome to bring your baby along to the clinic in their pram or car seat.

No. Osteopaths are primary healthcare practitioners, meaning you can self-refer and book directly online or by phone. If Zaneta identifies any underlying issues requiring further investigation, she can, with your consent, liaise directly with your local Surrey GP or gynaecology consultant.

Assisted births and prolonged labour increase the strain on pelvic floor muscles and vaginal tissue. A Mummy MOT® is highly recommended after an assisted delivery to assess soft tissue healing, check for pelvic organ prolapse, and guide gentle, progressive pelvic floor muscle rehabilitation.

High-impact activities like running, HIIT, or gymnastics place significant downward pressure on your pelvic organs and core. Zaneta conducts dynamic movement tests to evaluate how well your pelvic floor, deep abdominal muscles, and diaphragm manage intra-abdominal pressure during load, creating a tailored return-to-sport strategy so you can train without fear of leaking or heaviness.

Yes. Postnatal recovery extends beyond the core and pelvic floor. Carrying a newborn, repetitive lifting, and sitting in prolonged nursing positions strain your thoracic spine, shoulders, and neck. The Mummy MOT® evaluates ribcage mobility and upper body posture, offering hands-on treatment alongside practical ergonomics to keep you comfortable during daily baby care.

Pain during sex (dyspareunia) post-delivery is surprisingly common and often caused by scar tissue tension, pelvic muscle overactivity, or hormonal dryness. Zaneta provides a sensitive, thorough assessment of your pelvic floor muscle tone and scar tissue, using gentle myofascial techniques to relieve tension and restore tissue elasticity.

You will leave your session with a clear understanding of your current recovery stage and practical advice tailored to your personal goals and daily routines. You will also be offered a follow‑up rehabilitation session to continue your progress with targeted pelvic floor work, core stability training, and personalised exercise guidance.

Mummy MOT top tips

Top tips

Top Tips for Postnatal Pelvic & Core Health

  • Combine Pelvic Floor Work with Breathing: Always exhale on exertion (such as lifting your baby or standing up from a chair) while gently engaging your pelvic floor, allowing it to relax fully as you inhale.
  • Avoid Early High-Impact Exercise: High-impact activities like running or jump rope before your deep core and pelvic floor have recovered can increase downward pressure on pelvic organs.
  • Nourish and Mobilise C-Section Scars: Once your scar is fully closed and cleared by your doctor (typically around 6–8 weeks), gentle daily massage helps prevent deep fascial adhesions.
  • Mind Your Nursing Posture: Use supportive cushions to bring your baby up to your breast or bottle rather than slumping forward, which strains the upper back and restricts ribcage movement.
